A Round-Up

Despite my best efforts I have been remiss in keeping this site updated. I have added to my photograph gallery quite a bit and have even posted some on to my shop and to my BlueSky. However, this blog is very out of date. I know it’s not new year but I am resolved to do better and try and post much more regularly. However before I do, I thought a little round-up of what has been happening would be on order.

Sea Cadets. I am now the Officer in Charge of Worcester Unit and although it has been extremely busy, I am finding it very rewarding. Whilst on the subject, I am further along with the officer programme and and now just waiting on my commission which is real personal landmark.
I have changed jobs. I left the university in December and am no longer an outdoor instructor. It was a difficult decision as I miss the work and the people but my new role is proving very rewarding. I am now helping to develop a training centre that delivers qualifications related to the UK’s Confined Space Regulations (1997). I am hoping to add to our portfolio but until then I am busy studying, qualifying and deliver a whole new range of skills.
No new cameras yet. However I am still taking lots of photographs in both digital and film and so new videos are on the way.

Photography & Mental Health

Photography and Mental Health are closely linked for me. It has been such a long time since I have posted a video and this is down to my poor mental health. A common sign is that hobbies or tasks that you normally enjoy, often become a chore and you procrastinate until they become impossible. This is true of me and photography and making videos. I apologise and in this video, I try to explain.

Hopefully this answers some questions but please comment if you have any insight or feedback for me.

Later, Maybe

I’m currently making a video for my YouTube Channel and I’ll finish it, “later, maybe”. Two words that can rule your life if you are wrestling with poor mental health. You’ll notice I said wrestling and not suffering. Because, actually I’m doing pretty well currently, but I still struggle even with tasks that I really enjoy. I love making videos, especially when they are about photography, which this one is. But I haven’t completed a project in such a long time that my channel, something I have worked really hard on, is failing.

I think I currently have around twelve different video projects that are incomplete and ideas for several more. I could blame my busy work life but the truth is, poor mental health sucks your enthusiasm from you. Even for things that you normally enjoy.

I have proven to myself several times lately, that I am capable, I just need to convinced my mind. Bear with me, I am determined that I’ll achieve my goal. Later, maybe.

Canoe Restoration – Part 1

Follow me as I attempt to restore a 25 year old canoe. My Old Town Explorer 158 needs some attention and I am going to give it a try. I enjoy all forms of paddlesport and I am a British Canoeing Coach. So when I got the chance to own an Old Town canoe that needed a bit of TLC, I decided to give it a try. So this is the first video in a series. In Part 1 I begin to strip down the boat and assess how bad things are. I then start to give it a good clean.

Channel Re-launch

Yes I know I have promised before but then were setbacks. This means it has been nearly a year since my last video. Amazingly you have continued to support me, and I’m very grateful. I hope to reward you with some great content that you will love. Please watch this space and let’s get back to some regular vintage cameras, film photography outdoor education and soon amateur radio.

Double Celebration

Oh my goodness! I hit 1000 subscribers on my YouTube channel, at the same as hitting a total of 150,000 views. I am truly blown away by this. Especially as, due to various things happening in real life, I haven’t been posting recently. I really can’t thank you all enough, it really is appreciated.

The good news is that I now have several videos in various stages of production with the first one due to be released this weekend. So again, thank for sticking with me and I look forward to see you in the comments real soon.

HAM Radio

HAM Radio or Amateur Radio is a hobby that I have been interested in for some time. However I always assumed that it was a subject that was beyond me. My uncle was an operator back in the 70’s and both his experience and equipment seemed unattainable to a young boy. However, times have changed. In the UK, the Radio Society of Great Britain and Ofcom now offer three levels of licence, based on transmitting power. Foundation, Intermediate and Full. The foundation licence seems to be very achievable with a little study, an exam pass, it will allow you to transmit at limited power and on limited frequencies.

So I have begun my training and have booked my exam for later this month. I already had a portable set, the Baofeng UV-5R, to which I have added an upgraded antenna. I also have an SDR dongle. Both of these devices have been a lot of fun to listen in on various transmissions and get a general feel for the hobby. I will be adding new videos to my YouTube Channel over the coming months that might prove useful if you would like to make a start in a new hobby.

Rolleiflex SL35 E

The Rolleiflex SL35 E was one of the later 35mm SLR additions to the Rolleiflex range. Rollei has a complicated history but they made some lovely cameras. This one is no exception. Manufactured in Singapore from 1978, it has a twin made by Voigtländer called the VSL 3E. Both use the QBM mount. As soon as I get a new battery for this, I’ll be taking it out again, so look out for some new images from it.

Travelling With Photographic Film

Travelling abroad with undeveloped photographic film can add to an already stressful experience. The problem is the scanners used on our luggage by security. They can ruin the film even before you load it in your camera. In this video I offer some tips on how you can try and protect your films. Both from the old style x-ray scanners and the new CT machines.

Boeing Places

Get it? Because I reached 747 subscribers! OK so that’s a bad joke but it leads to me to say a huge “thank you” to you for all the support you have shown me and the channel. This post is also an apology for not having poste a new video in a while. I’m still here, I promise. I was away on holiday and work has been extremely busy since I got back. Please bear with me and I will get a new video out ASAP!

Another thing to mention is that I upgraded my logo. The old one was based on me dying my hair which I no longer do and so I thought I’d feature the beard instead. I hope you like it.
