A Round-Up

Despite my best efforts I have been remiss in keeping this site updated. I have added to my photograph gallery quite a bit and have even posted some on to my shop and to my BlueSky. However, this blog is very out of date. I know it’s not new year but I am resolved to do better and try and post much more regularly. However before I do, I thought a little round-up of what has been happening would be on order.

Sea Cadets. I am now the Officer in Charge of Worcester Unit and although it has been extremely busy, I am finding it very rewarding. Whilst on the subject, I am further along with the officer programme and and now just waiting on my commission which is real personal landmark.
I have changed jobs. I left the university in December and am no longer an outdoor instructor. It was a difficult decision as I miss the work and the people but my new role is proving very rewarding. I am now helping to develop a training centre that delivers qualifications related to the UK’s Confined Space Regulations (1997). I am hoping to add to our portfolio but until then I am busy studying, qualifying and deliver a whole new range of skills.
No new cameras yet. However I am still taking lots of photographs in both digital and film and so new videos are on the way.

Jump Start

I need a jump start. Not my car, but my “brand”. My social media presence, this website and most of all, my YouTube Channel. I haven’t posted anything in so long that I may have to re-learn how. It’s not that I haven’t wanted to. Quite the opposite actually. It’s jus that when my mental health is poor, activities that were previously enjoyed, seem to be the first to be neglected. Finding the time and making the effort are soon replaced with apathy and procrastination.

As I am currently in a relatively good place, mentally speaking; I am here to make a promise that I am back. I’m currently working on two new posts and a new video. The procrastination ends here. Now if you’ll excuse me, I am going to make a cup of tea.

Channel Re-launch

Yes I know I have promised before but then were setbacks. This means it has been nearly a year since my last video. Amazingly you have continued to support me, and I’m very grateful. I hope to reward you with some great content that you will love. Please watch this space and let’s get back to some regular vintage cameras, film photography outdoor education and soon amateur radio.

Double Celebration

Oh my goodness! I hit 1000 subscribers on my YouTube channel, at the same as hitting a total of 150,000 views. I am truly blown away by this. Especially as, due to various things happening in real life, I haven’t been posting recently. I really can’t thank you all enough, it really is appreciated.

The good news is that I now have several videos in various stages of production with the first one due to be released this weekend. So again, thank for sticking with me and I look forward to see you in the comments real soon.

HAM Radio

HAM Radio or Amateur Radio is a hobby that I have been interested in for some time. However I always assumed that it was a subject that was beyond me. My uncle was an operator back in the 70’s and both his experience and equipment seemed unattainable to a young boy. However, times have changed. In the UK, the Radio Society of Great Britain and Ofcom now offer three levels of licence, based on transmitting power. Foundation, Intermediate and Full. The foundation licence seems to be very achievable with a little study, an exam pass, it will allow you to transmit at limited power and on limited frequencies.

So I have begun my training and have booked my exam for later this month. I already had a portable set, the Baofeng UV-5R, to which I have added an upgraded antenna. I also have an SDR dongle. Both of these devices have been a lot of fun to listen in on various transmissions and get a general feel for the hobby. I will be adding new videos to my YouTube Channel over the coming months that might prove useful if you would like to make a start in a new hobby.

A Stripped Back Look

What do you think of the stripped back look? I decided that during the course of developing my website I had some how got a bit carried away with making it pretty. Nothing wrong with that. But, it has become bloated and a little bug-ridden. This meant it loaded slowly and not always successfully. All factors that would ruin my efforts with SEO. So I took all my clothes off and started again. OK not literally, but yes I have removed a lot of the unnecessary and whilst it might look more plan. In my eyes at least, it is much improved.

New Channel Intro

For a long time now I have been meaning to create an update for my YouTube channel intro. The previous one was a little simple but also quite dull. I was teaching myself Adobe After Effects and used the software to animate a signature that I could place over an image related to the subject of the video. Whilst it served a purpose, I wanted something a little different and that would better reflect the channel. Hopefully my new creation does that. Still short and punchy but this time it will be consistent across all my videos.

Featured Images

Regular visitors to this site will know that the images I create can be licenced or purchased from my shop. In addition, you can view a wider selection of my work in my gallery here. However, I thought it might be an idea to regularly feature an image and explain a little more about it. Where it was shot, what settings were used and a little background to it. These will be a low-resolution version, which will also be available, in all their glory, in the shop.

No More Facebook

That’s it, no more Facebook. I’ve decided to drop my attempts at setting up a Facebook page for my @sccjono social media brand and I have deleted the contents. Every other social media platform makes it very easy to create a brand and to maintain consistency across the board. However, Facebook seems to be less and less interested in it’s users. As I’m sure you can tell, I use my username as my online persona for everything that I create. I therefore have @sccjono associated with My YouTube channel, my Twitter, my Instagram and so on. Great! But apparently that’s just too difficult for Facebook.

The problem was, that when I decided to start my channel etc. I already had a personal Facebook page, which used the username of @sccjono. Because the Facebook don’t provide anything in the way of support, I referred to various blog posts, Reddit threads etc, to try and find out how best I could transfer the username to a public page. Overwhelmingly, the advice was to relinquish it from the private page and wait for a couple of weeks and I would be allowed to add it to the public page. It has now been nearly year and I am still not allowed to transfer it, as it is “in use”.

I have tried the support pages and the support inbox but there is no option to contact them. So instead, I have decided to delete the page.

Site Updates

Over the last few days I have been making some updates to the site. Some SEO stuff to keep up with Google’s policies. I have also added a new page that showcases my vintage camera collection. This in turn means I could remove some large photos off the home page, which were causing it to load a little slowly. Finally I have added some localisation information, again for the benefit of some search engines.

I’m afraid that a lot of this won’t be noticed by most of you, but hopefully it will help to make the site a bit more visible. In the meantime, I have about eight more YouTube videos in various stages of production, so look out for those soon. Please help me get to 100 subscribers if you haven’t already.
