A Round-Up

Despite my best efforts I have been remiss in keeping this site updated. I have added to my photograph gallery quite a bit and have even posted some on to my shop and to my BlueSky. However, this blog is very out of date. I know it’s not new year but I am resolved to do better and try and post much more regularly. However before I do, I thought a little round-up of what has been happening would be on order.

Sea Cadets. I am now the Officer in Charge of Worcester Unit and although it has been extremely busy, I am finding it very rewarding. Whilst on the subject, I am further along with the officer programme and and now just waiting on my commission which is real personal landmark.
I have changed jobs. I left the university in December and am no longer an outdoor instructor. It was a difficult decision as I miss the work and the people but my new role is proving very rewarding. I am now helping to develop a training centre that delivers qualifications related to the UK’s Confined Space Regulations (1997). I am hoping to add to our portfolio but until then I am busy studying, qualifying and deliver a whole new range of skills.
No new cameras yet. However I am still taking lots of photographs in both digital and film and so new videos are on the way.

Photography & Mental Health

Photography and Mental Health are closely linked for me. It has been such a long time since I have posted a video and this is down to my poor mental health. A common sign is that hobbies or tasks that you normally enjoy, often become a chore and you procrastinate until they become impossible. This is true of me and photography and making videos. I apologise and in this video, I try to explain.

Hopefully this answers some questions but please comment if you have any insight or feedback for me.

Street Photography in Liverpool

Liverpool is another great place for street photography. The combination of classic and modern architecture makes this area very photogenic to me and it includes a fabulous waterfront area that is steeped in history. As a music fan, Liverpool immediately brings to mind The Beatles and so I just had to head back to where it all started, The Cavern Club.

Cloning Yourself in Photoshop

A popular request I get is asking how to clone yourself in Photoshop. Sometimes called a multiplicity shot. Named after the 1996 film starring Michael Keaton. In this video I show you a simple technique, using just a phone camera, to clone you, or someone else, in the same image. Practice makes perfect so go and try for yourself and have fun with it.

Rolleiflex SL35 E

The Rolleiflex SL35 E was one of the later 35mm SLR additions to the Rolleiflex range. Rollei has a complicated history but they made some lovely cameras. This one is no exception. Manufactured in Singapore from 1978, it has a twin made by Voigtländer called the VSL 3E. Both use the QBM mount. As soon as I get a new battery for this, I’ll be taking it out again, so look out for some new images from it.

Street Photography in Birmingham

Birmingham is a great place for street photography. But I don’t often get time and so I jumped at the chance to take a few cameras for a walk recently. The combination of classic and modern architecture makes this area very photogenic to me. Especially as the modern architecture is so diverse in style. I hope you enjoy taking a walk with me.

Travelling With Photographic Film

Travelling abroad with undeveloped photographic film can add to an already stressful experience. The problem is the scanners used on our luggage by security. They can ruin the film even before you load it in your camera. In this video I offer some tips on how you can try and protect your films. Both from the old style x-ray scanners and the new CT machines.

Developing 120 Film At Home | Cinestill DF96 Monobath

Developing 120 (medium format) film at home using Cinestill DF96 Monobath. A one-step process of reusable chemicals to both save time and money. Better for the environment too! But is it any good? In this video I try to find out. Using some Ilford HP5 400 that I shot with the Yashica-A, I mix the chemicals with water. It’s then a quick and easy process to produce some nice negatives.

The Yashica-A. Introduced around 1959. A twin-lens reflex camera that takes 120 medium format film. I found mine in a house clearance sale and it needed a lot of TLC to get it working properly. It still needs some work but at least it takes great pictures and I love it. Perhaps I’ll make another video about how I got it working, so look out for that. This is a great introduction to medium format film photography.

Creating Puddles in Photoshop

My latest video is a tutorial on how to create puddles in Photoshop. I show you two different techniques, one simple and one more complicated but more realistic. Adding puddles to street scenes etc. can add a mood or atmosphere to an image without the need for you to stand out in the rain.
